From Disposable to Reusable: Reusable Tableware “Reuse and Return” Program

Funded by Environment and Conservation Fund, the project provides a reuse platform on takeaway tableware for general public in Hong Kong to pilot a closed-loop system that is reusable and returnable.

Starting from January 6 in 2025, Eco-City Foundation will provide general public in Hong Kong with a brand new platform for borrowing and returning reusable tableware and food containers. This encourages the public to experience renting reusable containers for takeout meals, which can be returned to designated return stations after use, replacing the use of single-use packaging, establishing reuse habits, and minimizing landfill waste.

This is a waste reduction project funded by the Environment and Conservation Fund, and organized by Eco-City Foundation. Based on the fact that Hong Kong generates over 3.5 million tons of solid waste annually, with about 40% consisting of food waste and related packaging, these figures highlight the importance of solid waste management, particularly in reducing food waste and single-use disposables.

Eco-City Foundation will initiate a 12-month ‘Reuse & Return’ platform, and we look forward to jointly exploring the possibilities of promoting from disposable to reusable in Hong Kong!
